Photographer Julien Mauve combines nostalgia with everyday adult living in his beautiful series Back to Childhood. He discovered an old box of toys in his grandparents’ attic and became inspired to bring his memories to life through modern day, adult interactions with the items. He says, “Going further than their power to generate nostalgia, toys offer those who animate them a marvelous power to reinvent the world.”

I had so many of these toys as a kid and I have to admit that my belly flipped a little when I first looked at the photos and remembered playing with them myself. And then of course I remember my own child playing with some of these toys too…namely, Sophie the giraffe, a favorite of hers that I’ve saved. Julien says about the toys, “Each of them reminded me of a particular moment of my childhood and I felt emotionally connected to them.” I totally understand what he’s saying and I think that the photographs perfectly illustrate those feelings.

I realized my post for the homework this week never really posted…the never ending battle of technology! So I am pushing the homework back it will be DUE NEXT WEDNESDAY* 4/25*

Write a short story in response to one of the photographers that I have posted about in the last few weeks (scroll down to read and see all photograph/photographers). In your short story you should become a subject (person/thing) within the photograph.

Where do you find the photographers that inspire you? As you read The Natural History of the Senses translate the image within her conversations around sight, smell, touch etc. It would be interesting to write an artist statement for these works or your own work after reading her book....

A lot of my inspiration is from some of my professors/classes over the years. I am a little obsessed with blogging, researching, and reading so I also find a lot of the contemporary artist that way.

“Sarah Pickering’s Explosions, Fires, and Public Order is a visually arresting glimpse into the secret world of civil defense by one of today’s up-and-coming artists.

Combining four series, Explosions, Fires, and Public Orderbegins with Public Order, a project exploring the Metropolitan Police Public Order Training Centre, a simulated urban environment where officers rehearse responses to civic unrest. The Explosions series documents the tactical use of controlled explosions by the British military to add realistic stress to training exercises. The Fire Series and Incident, Pickering’s most recent work, were produced while she was an artist in residence at the UK Fire Training College. There, she photographed blazes set inside meticulously and elaborately constructed home interiors, as well as the stark, charred remnants of fake urban settings.

Pickering’s projects reflect an aspect of the current zeitgeist: terrorism matched with omnipresent anxiety. “My work explores the idea of imagined threat and response, and looks at fear and planning for the unexpected, merging fact and fiction, fantasy and reality,” she states. While the images inExplosions, Fires, and Public Order have a transcendent formal beauty, they are a disquieting reminder of the delicate balance between order and chaos.”

“The element of old mastery style portraits is what initially makes the work familiar, but of course, what is going on in the photographs is something conceptual and not typical in the least.

The still-life portraits contain objects from Brinkmann’s collection, from which he calls himself a “serial collector.” A here is the kicker: Thorsten Brinkmann photographs himself in these scenes and costumes. And of course, the absence of the face is a powerful characteristic in all of these photographs.”

on now until september 30th, 2012

spanish-born, brussels-based artist isaac cordal has developed a miniature environmental installation series entitled ‘waiting for climate change’.
the collection of small sculptures were created by cordal as a commentary upon stereotypes of individuals from various backgrounds confronting
the issue of climate change in their differing ways. the artist’s treatment of each miniature character speaks to a passivity many people feel towards
the seemingly futile state of the earth’s health. cordal’s temporary works exist in public spaces; the absence of walls surrounding the exhibit allows
for the pieces to be accessed by passers-by in addition to the viewers who would normally seek out the artist’s work.

the assemblage of carved figurines, all measuring no larger than 25 cm, have been placed throughout thirty locations across nine coastal municipalities
of the flemish coast. in addition to the miniature subjects displayed on the beaches of de panne, belgium, and other sea-side locations, the artist has also
developed several pieces to be shown at villa de chalutier, located in de panne as well.
